FIREFIGHTERS discovered a horde of cannabis plants in an Astley Bridge house this morning.

Crews from Bolton North were called to a suspected fire in Russet Walk, off Hillview Road, at 9.30am when neighbours reported seeing smoke coming from the roof.

In two upstairs bedrooms they found 50 cannabis plants and equipment.

An electrical fault from the equipment heating the plants is believed to have caused the small fire which resulted in smoke damage to the property.

Crew manager Peter Wilmott said no one was in the rented property at the time of the fire.

He added: "One neighbour had not seen anyone go in or out, and another said they had seen someone coming out of the house a couple of times."

Firefighters called police to the house.

Police confirmed they found equipment at the property that suggested it was a cannabis farm and inquiries were ongoing.
