FIREFIGHTERS are warning about the dangers of disposable barbecues after a blaze destroyed decking and ripped through the roof of a property being renovated.

Crews were mobilised to the property in Greenthorne Close, Edgworth, at 1.30am and stayed until 9am the next morning.

At the height of the blaze, around 15 firefighters were tackling the blaze and an aerial appliance was used.

Earlier that evening, food was being cooked on a disposable barbecue which had been left on the decking and is being blamed for causing the fire, either through a stray coal, or the heat causing wood to smoulder and set alight.

Watch Manager Neil Mercer at Bolton North Fire Station said: "The back was well alight when we arrived and the fire had got into the roof space.

"We spent 40 minutes tackling the fire and the crews worked well to save the majority of the property.

"The roof will need to be replaced. The patio doors melted in the blaze."

Firefighters from Bolton North, Bolton Central, Ramsbottom and Lancashire attended.

Fire crews used the air unit to ensure all embers were out and stayed on the scene until yesterday morning.

The property was fitted with smoke alarms.

Mr Mercer said: "If you are using disposable barbecues do not leave them on decking, place them on a pavement.

"I have been to a number incidents where disposable barbecues or smoking has decking alight.

"We will be doing a leaflet drop and speaking to people in the area about using disposable barbecues."

The family said they were shocked at what happened and urged people to be careful when using barbecues. They praised the work of the fire service.

One member of the family, who did not want to be named said: “We could see the flames. It was well alight.

"We are shocked, water was poured over the barbecue. Just be careful when using a disposable barbecue."
