A RETIRED engineer has enjoyed a new lease of life after joining the local branch of a two-centuries old ‘friendly society’.
Ernest Harper, from Ladybridge, says he has been kept ‘alert and busy’ by taking up the five key ‘ingredients’ offered by his nearest Oddfellows branch.
Mr Harper said: “I write the branch newsletter four times a year, I play crown green bowls and I help to arrange trips. It keeps me young, agile and on my toes.
“I’ve never looked back since I read a leaflet about the Oddfellows and decided to join. I’d recommend it to anyone. I’ve found the people very friendly and welcoming, and it’s a great source of activity and friendship. There’s always someone to turn to whatever the situation.
“There’s lots going on at our branch, with 400 members and groups organising social activities, trips out and even a group to deal with the finances. “
Mr Harper worked as an engineer for American company Beloit, one of the biggest paper machine manufacturers in the world, for 43 year.
