FAMILIES braved the rain to get a taste of the work that the fire service does to keep them safe. 

Bolton Central Community Fire Station held its annual open day on Saturday and large crowds of people both young and old went along to enjoy the fun.

There was plenty on offer for people to enjoy, including a miniature fire engine for youngsters to get a ride in, ice cream, a classic fire engine, a simulator highlighting dangers on the road and a chance to have a firefighter experience.

And braver visitors could also take a ride in the fire service’s aerial appliance and get a sky high view of Bolton.

Firefighters were on hand to talk to members of the public about the prevention work they do and spread the safety message about making sure smoke alarms are fitted.

The fire service was joined by colleagues from the Army Reserves, The Royal Engineers, Bolton Mountain Rescue Team, North West Ambulance Service, Greater Manchester Police, St John’s Ambulance and the North West Blood Bike, who were all their to talk to members of the public.

GMFRS Bolton borough commander Lee Coleman said: “It has been fantastic.

“What a great day despite the weather.

“We have had a really good attendance. It is all about community support and getting the fire safety message out there.

“These events are important to us because it allows us to engage with members of the community.”

Steve James, medical equipment officer at Bolton Mountain Rescue Team, added: “It has been fantastic. We have had a lot of people asking us questions.”
