THE first Daisy Hill Flower, Fruit and Vegetable Show was a blooming success.
Staged at the local cricket, it was organised by the Daisy Hill in Bloom volunteer. Trophies and certificates were presented
Veronica Swinburne, one of the organisers, said: "We had no idea how many people would turn up but we were delighted with the number of entrants and their enthusiasm. We were impressed with the variety and qualify of many of the entries — such as the giant leeks, and the magnificent displays of dahlias. "It was especially nice that several children entered — it’s good to see that the gardening tradition is being passed down the generations."
"I’ve seen similar events in country villages but there’s no reason why we can’t do the same in a more urban area.
"I wasn’t surprised to see tomatoes, roses, apples and potatoes, but there were some unexpected entries; who knew you could grow aubergines in a suburb of Bolton.
