A DRIVER fled from the scene of a crash abandoning his car in the middle of a busy road.

His vehicle slammed into a parked car which then crashed into a gatepost.

The incident occurred at around 1pm today on Bolton Road, near Algernon Road in Walkden.

Witnesses reported a black Vauxhall Zafira overtaking other cars as it came from the direction of Walkden town centre heading towards Farnworth.

As it neared the junction of Algernon Road, the vehicle veered to the nearside and lost control, mounting the pavement and colliding with a white Volkswagen Scirocco that hit the gatepost.

The driver of the Vauxhall attempted to drive off but had snapped the driveshaft so abandoned the car in the middle of the road and ran off in the direction of St Mary's Park.

The driver was described as a white male, with a shaved head, about 40 to 50 yrs of age, wearing a dark coloured jacket and blue jeans and the vehicle was seized by police.

PC Paul Ashworth from the Specialist Operations Roads Policing Unit said: “This happened on a busy main road and the driver clearly showed no regard for other members of the public, inquiries are ongoing to trace the driver and I urge anyone who witnessed the collision or has dash cam footage to contact us with this information.

"Fortunately no-one was hurt but the reckless actions of this driver could have resulted in a very serious incident."
