THE community will come together tomorrow to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day.

Faith groups, council members and school pupils will gather in Festival Hall at the town hall at 1.15pm to pay tribute to the millions of victims of the Second World War genocide.

According to Chan Parmar, strategic officer at Bolton Interfaith Council, there will be almost 16 schools taking part — 120 pupils and more than 30 members of staff.

He said: "It is vital we remember the Holocaust and other genocides in the world which have inflicted pain and suffering beyond belief purely for greed, power and to eliminate the minorities through hatred.

"Sadly we see these things in modern days too. Remembering the Holocaust and other victims of such atrocities is a reminder to learn from the mistakes from the past."

Music at the event will be provided by the Bolton School Girls' Division and Bolton Music Service.

Speakers will include the Mayor of Bolton Cllr Roger Hayes and acting leader of Bolton Council Cllr Linda Thomas.

There will be Jewish representation from Rabbi Lever, who will recite in Hebrew, and the president of the Jewish Council for Greater Manchester.

And there will be two special guests from the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance who will be flying in all the way from Australia to attend the ceremony. Guests are encouraged to get there and be seated by 1pm. For more information contact the Bolton Interfaith Council on 01204 546110 or go to boltoninterfaithcouncil.org.uk
