HARD-WORKING volunteers will be packing 50,000 meals to be sent across the world in a bid to fight global hunger.

The Rotary Club of Bolton Lever and charity Rise Against Hunger are partnering up for District 1285 Meal Pack, which will take place at Sharples School on Saturday, April 14.

The groups are calling for help from the community and from businesses, who are being asked to contribute through taking out sponsorship options for the event.

Rotary club president Dr Ravi Mene said it would be the third event of its kind to take place in the North West.

He said: "It builds upon the success of the previous meal packs in Warrington and at the Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland conference in Manchester.

"This is an ideal team building event for local businesses, with employees who want to get involved in a hands-on humanitarian project."

The Rise Against Hunger meal packing events are volunteer-based programmes putting together 'highly nutritious dehydrated meals', which comprise of rice, soya, vegetables and 23 essential vitamins and minerals.

Organisers are appealing for volunteers to cover two or four-hour packing shifts on the day and financial donations could also be made.

Each packer is asked to bring a food item like tinned beans, tinned soup or pasta for distribution to local food banks within the Bolton Lever district.

The club would also welcome involvement from Rotary Clubs in the North West.

The event is open to volunteers from church groups, youth organisations, community groups, clubs and service organisations.

Individual volunteers and family groups are also very welcome to join in, including children aged five and above when accompanied by an adult.
