STUDENTS from a Bolton school are not planning to put up their feet this summer — instead they will be heading to East Africa to volunteer on community projects.

The 13 students, from Thornleigh Salesian College will work in schools and medical centres as well as orphanage in Tanzania.

But first the students have to raise cash to pay for the trip.

One of the students, Rocco Vivace, aged 18, hopes to raise to £1,800.

Rocco said “Our plans while we are over are to volunteer in schools and medical centres.

“I will be given a class for a month and will have to prepare lessons every evening for the next day and mark work, teaching maths and physics.

“Others will help with different subjects and those more medically inclined will be helping out in the medical centres. We also have community task like painting and refurbishing the local orphanage, something we are raising a lot of money for this year.”

The project was started to recognise the college’s links with Salesian members in Africa and every two years a group of students from Thornleigh Sixth Form travel to Tanzania for a month.

Volunteers are needed in Tanzania as the level of poverty is very high, with many adults and children suffering from hunger and malnutrition.

To help raise money for the trip Rocco and a small team of his family and friends will be taking on the Born Survivor challenge a 10k obstacle run at Capesthorne Hall in May

If more money is raised than the target, it will be donated to charity.
