LOCAL Newspaper Week (LNW) highlights the important role the local press plays in communities. On day five of the celebration, deputy news editor Craig Archer went along to a local Bolton radio station to discuss the campaign.

BOLTON FM is pretty much the radio equivalent of the Bolton News.

Based in the town centre, the station reports on the news and issues important only to the people of the borough.

Celebrating its ninth birthday this year, the station is an institution in the town and well known for helping young people and volunteers.

So it seemed only fitting for me to discuss the Local Newspaper Week initiative on the station.

Bolton FM presenter Robert Hodson is a well known face in the area through his work on the station. And he, like like me, is passionate about local news and local issues.

Robert’s love for local news shone through when I appeared on his live show.

He was very interested in Local Newspaper Week and explained there was a similar initiative for local radio.

Robert asked me why LNW so important. I explained that the initiative was important to help people understand the role of the Bolton News. In the days of fake news, we are a trusted new outlet which is here to represent readers and the wider community.

We will take on the politicians and people in power to make sure they have the interests of local people at heart.

Roberts was also interested in my interview on Radio 2 and pulled my leg over Jo Whiley’s comments that I was a “tired and cynical” journalist.

He finished up by going through some of the headlines in yesterday’s Bolton News.
