AROUND 90 people attended a sportsman’s dinner event on Saturday night in support of a cause inspired by a mum-of-three who died from cancer last year.

Polly’s Angels, which was set up by friends of Atherton woman Polly Haydock, held the event at Leigh Sports Village which featured a talk from former Irish boxer Joe Egan, an ex-sparring partner of Mike Tyson.

Polly’s Angels trustee Joanne Howcroft delivered a speech about Polly’s journey from when she was diagnosed with cancer in 2015.

With the help of her fellow trustees, Joanne is hoping to make Polly’s Angels a registered charity later this year and provide a better quality of life for individuals who suffer with a range of conditions and illnesses.

Members of Polly’s family were in attendance including her widow Dan.

He added: “It is an honour that the work which is being done is in Polly’s name- it really means a lot.”

A slideshow from fundraisers including question and answer sessions with Peter Kay was also displayed on screens in the venue.

An auction of sports items took place on the night including a canvas of Joe fighting along with signed memorabilia.

A range of prizes were also handed out in a raffle.
