A WOMAN has been injured after a car collided with a pedestrian in the town centre.

It is understood that a Vauxhall Viva collided with an elderly pedestrain twice before crashing into a traffic light and landing on top of the woman.

The woman in her 70s has been taken to hospital for treatment.

The incident happened at around 1pm outside Olympus Fish and Chip Restaurant on the corner of Newport Street and Great Moor Street.

A statment from GMP said: "Police were called to Great Moor Street, Bolton, shortly before 1.20pm on Wednesday June 6 following reports of a collision between a pedestrian and a car.

"Officers attending found a woman who had been in collision with a grey Vauxhall Viva.

"Officers remain at the scene.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

Witnesses reported hearing a lound bang and seeing the car reverse out of a parking space, picking up speed, and hitting the pedestrian.

The emergency services provided treatment to the woman on the scene before taking her to hospital. A police cordon has also been set up around the surrounding area.

A spokesman from North West Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 1.07pm to reports that there was a collision between a car and a woman.

“We have taken a woman in her 70s to the Manchester Royal Infirmary. Her injuries are not clear, there was a chest injury, but there was no major trauma.”

Eyewitness, Josh Coulton, aged 18, from Manchester, said he saw a car which had been parked in a bay outside Olympus reverse, spin and then hit a pedestrian and a traffic light.

He added: "It was really loud, there was a big bang as she smashed a bollard as well. The driver looked very shocked when she came out of her car.

"I saw her face the whole way through and it looked like she had slammed on the accelerator thinking it was the brake.

"It was almost like she was doing a three-point-turn but it looked like she lost control of the car. He head was back and her hands were waving around.

"The woman went flying and I think the car might have gone over her."

Another eyewitness added: “I heard the noise and I saw the car was on its back wheels and then bounced back falling on top of the lady.

“The car had knocked her over, hitting her twice and then landed on top of her.

“I think the driver must have panicked and then the car must have picked up speed.”
