IF there is one thing that trashy reality shows like Love Island do it’s push viewers towards old TV favourites.

I don’t know what the viewing figures are for programmes like Vera, Endeavour, Inspector George Gently and Midsomer Murders but it wouldn’t be surprising if they’re currently riding high.

It could be generational, of course, and older viewers just clinging to “safe” viewing but, actually, I don’t see much wrong with that. Surely TV is there to entertain as well as inform and if a favourite programme gives pleasure, where’s the harm?

The broadcast bosses must understand this point as these favourites seem to run on a loop at prime viewing time, sometimes in direct competition with reality shows. Some, like Fools and Horses and The Vicar of Dibley, never seem to be off-screen.

All in all, when it comes to a straight choice, old favourites may win hands down.
