1940s Hair

Michael Ainsworth, senior stylist at Saks,Churchgate, Bolton

The pine curl wave is all over the catwalks and on every top model at the moment. It is versatile however can a bit hard to achieve.

If you have a natural wave in your hair then use that. When you get up in the morning, smooth the ends of the hair so it doesn't look frazzled, this is ultimately about looking groomed.

It's not about the poker straight although you can use your straightening irons to add a few smooth curls.

You can use a light uplift spray on the roots to lift it or try a blob of mouse to create volume.

Alternatively get your hands on some large velcro rollars and set the hair for ten minutes, drag your hands through the hair to get the best look.

If you're unsure about doing this at home, lets face it, it is hard to step away from the irons, you can book in with a consultation with a member of the Saks team who will be happy to help.

Pretty Goth

Natasha Cartwright, beauty manager at Saks, Churchgate, Bolton

This look can be achieved fairly easily and can be adapted for day and night.

To get the look at home you should start with a good natural base, with a cream to powder finish on younger more oily skins and a liquid or cream finish on mature skin, which might be lacking in moisture.

After the base, apply concealer where needed and set with translucent powder for a lasting finish.

Then with a black kohl pencil, line the eyes as close to the lashes as possible along the top lid and continue onto the bottom lash line with a neutral tone or even white. Take care not to line the inner eye as this will clog the corner.

With a dark shadow like charcoal, line the upper eyeline over the kohl already applied and when you reach the outer eye, sweep the colour up and out towards the brow to create an almond shape.

Sweep back into the socket line to form a triangle at the outer corner of the eye and fill between the outline with black colour. Now for the vitals, blend, blend and blend again.

Take a small amount of colour under the eye, over the pencil and blend to a soft finish. Take a light sweep of check colour - a soft rose would look well. Complete with a slick of baby pink lipstick or gloss.

For deep set eyes or if you want a smokey look without looking like you've done a battle in a boxing ring, then only sweep the dark colour along the lash line. This is great for a day look too.
