Dear Style Rehab

Ahem, I have a rather embarrassing dilemma and need your help.

I am a mother-of-three who has lost her former washboard stomach. What seems to be in its place is an elasticity-free midriff. With the party season fast approaching what alternatives are available for women who want to hide the lumps but still feel glamorous?

Stretch marks and loose skin after giving birth is a problem most women endure. Although under the surface it seems untreatable without rigorous exercise or cosmetic surgery, on the surface it's nothing an empire-line and suction pants can't handle.

The beauty about clothing is it can deceive. It can accentuate your finer points and down-play the bad. So with a wobbly tummy it's a case of compressing, curving and cutting.

Compress the area with a pair of BIG knickers - we're talking thigh-to-rib, preferably seamless, in black or skin-coloured fabric depending on your ensemble. Most high street retailers now stock an underwear range to fight the belly bulge.

With your stomach confined in cotton it's time to emphasise your curves. Whether you opt for a cocktail dress with a plunging neckline, or a two-piece trew and top, choose a cut to compliment your shape.

If you prefer dresses then avoid colourful satin. Although satin silk flows softly over each curve of the body, natural light bounces from its glossy surface in the most unpredictable way - too risky in case the underwear has visible panty lines.

Choose empire-lined dresses in the same way your should select and empire-cut top paired with your trousers. By cinching in just under the bust you can rest assured that a bloated tummy or a muffin top will be concealed under cotton.

Empire lines are a failsafe option. They too, are available in a range of different styles - it's just a case of trial and error.

If all else fails then purchase a corset - there's no other way to feel sexy at a party than when tied into one. Although breathing is very limited, the impact is priceless.

One final thought, avoid anything belted around the middle, this will only draw attention to your problem area.

Good luck!
