A CONSTRUCTION site worker who got a Three Lions tattoo hours before Sunday’s Euro 2020 final says he has “no regrets” about his new ink work.

England and Bolton Wanderers fan Jack Atherton, 19, from Morris Green, paid a visit to Stingin Ink tattoo parlour on Chorley Old Road a mere hours before England’s clash with Italy at Wembley on Sunday evening.

He said: “It started off as a drunken bet between me and my stepdad. He said he would pay for the tattoo if I got it before kick off.

“So I thought, ‘why not?’.

“And the day before, me and my mates were talking about it and I just drunkenly decided that I was going to get it.

“I was pretty confident that we were going to win after the semi-final performance, and even more so after Shaw’s goal in the second minute - but it wasn’t to be this time.”

In fancy lettering, the tattoo at the top of his left arm reads: “England Euro 2020 Winners”.

While watching the final with his mates at Beeley’s Bar in Horwich, Jack got a lot of attention from fellow punters.

He said: “I think most people really liked it - or at least found it funny.

“There were a lot of people asking to take pictures of it.”

Despite the defeat for Gareth Southgate’s side after losing out on penalties to the Italians, the former Balshaw’s High School pupil says he has “no regrets” over getting his new tattoo.

He added: “The boys are already winners my eyes.

“They managed to take us through to a final after 55 years - it was amazing and they should be proud.

“If we win the World Cup next year, then I might get another tattoo to celebrate that. You never know.”

Nathan Pendlebury, a tattoo artist of five years, administered the ink work.

He said: “I didn’t really want to do it at first in case it jinxed the result, but I just went ahead and got on with it. It only took me about half an hour.

“We had a few more customers later that day who also wanted some England-themed tattoos - so I think Jack started some sort of trend.”
