When you are driving, how many times does someone cut you up? Doesn't let you out of a side street onto a main road? Or if you do let someone out and they don't say thank you, how do you feel?

In a bid to help reduce further the number of people being killed or seriously injured on our roads, DRIVESAFE are looking at people's attitudes when they get behind the wheel.

Today's motorist generally doesn't think about the way they drive and what they are doing but about other things that can distract them from driving. DRIVESAFE wants:

  • To encourage motorists away from behaving in any way selfishly, aggressively or thoughtlessly whilst they are in control of their vehicle.
  • To encourage positive, friendly behaviour, that brings out the best in other road users.

To highlight that all motorists should see themselves as an equal whilst on the road and not view their own needs as greater than others. DRIVESAFE wants drivers to:

  • Be patient
  • Be polite and kind
  • Respect other road users
  • Be courteous to all road users
  • Take your time

.

Stuart Howarth from DRIVESAFE said: We are trying to remind drivers that if you concentrate on your driving, therefore respond to what happens rather than react to something that suddenly appeared then driving can be more enjoyable as well as safer. The theme of the launch is going back to the 70's when driving was a little less stressful'.

To help create a more friendly and relaxed driving environment in Greater Manchester, DRIVESAFE are giving away some car freebies on Tuesday outside Bolton Town Hall.

The month-long campaign is being promoted on 180 Bus Backs and 30 Billboards across Greater Manchester advertising examples of being a model driver.

Set up in 2003, DRIVESAFE is the name for the Greater Manchester Casualty Reduction Partnership. All 15 partners are working together with the aim of meeting the Government's 2010 road casualty reduction statistics.

DRIVESAFE focuses on letting the people of Greater Manchester know about the dangers of using inappropriate speed & educating them on the benefits of driving appropriately to their surroundings.

DRIVESAFE's partners include the 10 Greater Manchester Local Authorities, Greater Manchester Police, the Greater Manchester Primary Care Trust, the Crown Prosecution Service, Her Majesty's Courts Service & the Highway's Agency. The co-ordination of the Partnership is done from the Programme Office, where a team of management and staff work together to ensure efficiency and best practice.
