THE driver of a car involved in a fatal crash on a stretch of moorland road could face charges, say police.

Officers are awaiting the results of accident reconstruction tests before a file is sent to the Crown Prosecution Service, which will decide if the 27-year-old is charged with driving offences.

No arrests have been made, but the driver has been interviewed.

Alex Hargreaves, aged 28, was a back seat passenger in a Volkswagen Lupo which collided head-on with another vehicle close to Abbey Village in Chorley, on Friday, October 26.

Emergency services were called to the A675 at 8.45pm. Mr Hargreaves, of Bury Road, Breightmet, was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is believed the driver lost control of the vehicle on a right-hand bend.

The Volkswagen collided with a Ford Focus and careered off the road before coming to rest on an embankment. The driver escaped with bruising and was discharged from hospital later that evening. A front seat passenger suffered a broken leg.

Sgt Steve Moon, of Lancashire Police, said: "When our investigation is complete, the findings, along with witness statements from the occupants of the car and other road users, will be sent to the CPS."
