THE message regarding the importance of recycling has now been absorbed by most people.

We know that we should recycle paper, bottles and tins and which bags and bins we must put them in so that the collectors will take them.

Recently, however, the issue of recycling has become more confusing. Cardboard and envelopes have entered the equation, collection days have changed and the rules seem to be different depending on which part of the borough you live in.

Now refuse collectors are apparently being told not to take large Christmas trees unless they have been chopped up, whereas previously householders simply left them by their recycling bins.

We understand the strains involved in collectors having to carry trees, but many people may find it extremely difficult to chop up such large items, while those without a green bin will have to visit a tip.

The easier recycling is made, the more people will cooperate and if the council wants to meet Government targets it must take this into consideration.
