RESIDENTS will get the chance to have their say on plans to knock down their homes and rebuild them with eco-friendly houses.

Union Road and Yates Street in Tonge Moor could be revamped as part of a £7.5 million plan put forward by councillors.

The rundown area has been plagued by drugs and crime in recent years.

Specific details on the scheme will only be revealed after consultation with residents.

Yates Street resident Nigel Roberts, aged 42, works from home as a website designer. He has owned the house for 13 years and refurbished the interior last year.

He said: "I am yet to make up my mind on whether I am for or against this idea as residents have not been given much information about what the plans include.

"I hope the consultation will tell us what we need to know."

A council report in October said the aim with the replacement homes would be to offer a "greener housing solution", making full use of natural light and using environmentally friendly initiatives.

Some homes which are structurally sound may be refurbished rather than demolished and rebuilt.

A council spokesman said: "All residents affected have been invited to a drop-in consultation session which is taking place on Thursday.

"It will give residents the opportunity to discuss any issues they may have with council officers."
