Police are appealing for witnesses after an 83-year-old woman was robbed in Stalybridge.

The woman was getting into her car in the Aldi car park at about 3pm on Thursday, December 13, when a man came up behind her and stole her bag, jolting her shoulder in the process.

The woman ran after him for a short distance shouting 'thief,' but the man managed to run away and jumped over railings onto the canal towpath. He was last seen heading towards the Bayley Street area.

The woman, who lives locally, had her mobile phone and purse inside her handbag that contained cash, and other important documents. She suffered minor bruising and was left shocked.

The offender is described as white, 6ft, medium build, in his late 20s to early 30s with short brown hair.

The day was a busy pre-Christmas shopping day and police believe a number of people must have seen the incident.
