A DRIVER escaped injury after he lost control of his car during a hail storm and careered across a motorway.

The 55-year-old was travelling southbound along the M66 when he hit the central reservation between junction 2 and junction 1 at 8.15pm on Tuesday.

His Ford Fiesta then span across two lanes of the carriageway and came to rest against a barrier on the hard shoulder.

Fire crews were called to make the vehicle safe and one lane of the motorway was closed for 45 minutes.

The driver did not require hospital treatment.
