North Lancs One

Trafford MV 20 Bolton 3 BOLTON were left counting the cost of a high missed tackle count in the first half as they began the new year with defeat.

Three unanswered tries in the first 40 minutes set a lead James Brodie's side could never claw back, though they will be encouraged by an improved second-half show.

They now find themsleves in a four-way battle for fourth place in the league heading into the second half of the 2008 campaign.

Three avoidable scores meant even though they began to make some in roads into a tough Trafford side in the second half, they always left themselves open to a try on the break.

And after Rob Weatherhead's penalty put them within two scores in the second period, so it proved, as Trafford his on the counter to end any thoughts of a comeback.

The seconds ground out a hard-earned victory at home to West Park thirds in a physical encounter.

The highlight of a dour first-half was a midfield brawl which led to Matthew Parrish and his opposite number being sin-binned for 10 minutes.

Bolton broke through for the first time when a quick recycle and pass from Leigh allowed Hardman to cross the line for an unconverted try.

They extended their lead when O'Donohoe fed Carswell out wide, and his speed ensured a second try of the game.

It again went unconverted, but Bolton hung on for victory in a nip-and-tuck encounter.

The thirds remain three points off the top after a convincing victory over league leaders, Pendle firsts.

Stand-off Guy Lovegreen kicked an early penalty before Jim Ramsell was driven over the line for a try well-orchesterated by young scrum-half James Hardy.

Lovegreen added a conversion, and then kicked the additional points when James Dean raced in for a breakaway try in the second half to seal victory.

Pendle added a consolation penalty of their own, but even a long march to the shower blocks was not enough to dampen Bolton's spirits after an excellent result.

The third team enjoyed a comprehensive 41-10 victory over Kirby Lonsdale.

Tries from Robinson (2), Turner (2), Towlers, Keogh and a debut score for Parkinson did the damage - with Bridgewood adding two conversions.

The club are also sad to announce the passing of club member Roy Pemberton.

Roy was a stalwart of the club for some 35 years. His funeral will be held on Friday, January 11 at Overdale Crematorium at 11.45pm, returning to the club for 12.30pm.
