A climber from Bolton has died after plunging 1,000ft from a ridge on one of the Lake District's highest mountains.
Police said the 60-year-old man, from Bolton, was blown off the ridge in high winds at Brown Cove on Helvellyn.
A companion called emergency services and a rescue dog located the man who had sustained multiple injuries.
He was flown by RAF helicopter to Barrow's Furness General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on Wednesday.
Rescuers from the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team had been called out at about 3pm.
A spokesman said the rescue effort was made more difficult because the helicopter could not land due to high winds.
Cumbria Police said the identity would be released after the man's family had been informed.
