DEVELOPERS are likely to concentrate on refurbishing buildings rather than building new housing as the economy slows, according to Rob Bath, regional leader of building firm Rok.
He said he expects only modest growth over the next 12 months but believes the construction industry is in a relatively healthy condition, although skills shortages will remain a challenge.
Mr Bath said: "Over the past few years, private housing has been the strongest construction sector in the region, largely because of the buoyant housing market. But things are changing."
Rok has a base at the former Durose and Gourlay site in Westhoughton and Mr Bath said much of its work this year would be on public sector housing, as the Government works towards its target of providing 240,000 new homes a year.
He said: "The most consistent area of business will be maintenance and repairs, which traditionally sees an increase in demand when the larger capital projects are put on hold."
