Bolton Wanderers fans say they are being beaten "like animals" by riot police in Madrid.

There were problems before and during the game and it has continued after the match, according to fans.

Our reporter Amanda Smith said she had seen major problems in the Bolton end with police wading in with batons.

Fans are scrambling to protect themselves as the police lay into them.

The tension in the ground is high, she reports.

Fans called The Bolton News earlier to say they had been attacked both outside and inside the stadium in Madrid.

Atletico Madrid fans have also been fighting among themselves.

Tensions, reports suggest, are running high with some fans having had treatment for cuts and bruises.

"One man has had his finger broken and there are many being needing stitches," says 44-year-old fan Janet Peel.

"The police are treating fans like animals.

"I spent hours getting here and I've spent a lot of money. People were having a good time today until we got to the stadium.

"They have their batons up for no reason and it's utter chaos outside."

Gordon Shaw, aged 40, added: "They are hitting out at people for nothing."

Our reporter in Madrid, Amanda Smith, said during the game: "Police are hitting people and there is trouble in the Madrid ends of the stadium too."
