On capturing the stunning snaps of the Kingfisher, he said: “I have photographed them in the past, they’re not easy birds to photograph on Middlebrook.

“They fly up and down the stream, it requires a bit of luck for them to land in the right place.”

Dr Rogers continued: “In this particular one, I didn’t expect to see it. I hadn’t seen Kingfishers on Middlebrook for about three months, you get spells where you see them virtually every day and people on the path say they’ve seen them.

“I was looking for something else and saw it, you can’t miss them, you see a flash of blue and orange.

“This one I saw going down the stream from Lostock Station. Then I spent maybe two hours walking up and down, I saw it going again in that time.”

He added: “I was about to give up when I came back to the Mill Bridge, I often stand there looking downstream for wildlife.

“I didn’t see anything, but suddenly saw something drop into the water from a branch. On the branch was a little Kingfisher, it was right next to me.

“And it let me take photos of it, from about 20-30 metres away, but I’ve got a telescopic lens so was fine.”
