Emergency services were called to two crashes on the same road within less than an hour of each other.

One of the smashes happened at a notorious junction where roadworks are taking place.

The other crash happened further up in Egerton.

The first crash took place on Blackburn Road in Egerton, near to the Masons Arms pub, at around 7.30pm last night (Wednesday).

A spokesperson from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said: “With regards to the accident on Blackburn Road close to the border with Darwen, this was a very minor road traffic collision where a car has hit some parked cars, no injuries.

“However, a 36-year-old woman is in custody having been arrested on suspicion of drink driving.”

A spokesperson from GMP said: “With regards to the incident last night at the junction of Blackburn Road and Moss Bank Way, we received a call at 8.12pm last night to reports of two cars involved in a minor road traffic collision. Both vehicles were recovered and there were no serious injuries.

There have been a number of crashes on the junction, with a local councillor calling on transport bosses to see if the junction could be made safer as roadworks take place.

An Astley Bridge resident spoke on the roadworks, saying:

“It feels like a bigger mess than before, all the heavy artillery going up and down has left the surface of the road in a complete state.

“The lane markings are overlapping, it's not surprising people are driving into each other, and the new give-way line on the left turn coming off Moss Bank Way is confusing, it creates a margin of error that the junction just doesn't need.”
