Fire crews conducted a dramatic rescue in the early hours after a woman toppled 25 ft foot over a bridge.

She fell onto a railway siding avoiding the main railway track in Bolton.

Trains were stopped as firefighters brought her to safety.

Miraculously, she has seemed to have escaped any serious injury.

Emergency services say she had been sitting a bridge on Moncrieffe Street and Lever Street Bolton.

Fire crews from Manchester, Bolton and Stretford attended the scene, as well as the ambulance service.

Firefighters used specialist equipment to rescue the woman.

Crews used a turntable ladder to lift the woman on a stretcher back to street level after she fell backwards after sitting on the wall of the bridge.

Bolton Central watch manager, Darren Collier, said: “We were called at around 12.45am to Moncrieffe Street and Lever Street, near the railway bridge that goes over the railway lines.

“A lady had been sat on wall and toppled over backwards, falling about 25 feet.

“She was well clear of the tracks and on the siding of the railway.

“We ended up having to stop all the trains coming in and out of Bolton due to us having crews working trackside.

“She had injuries but nothing that we deemed as life-threatening.

“We ended up securing her to a stretcher and using a specialist appliance to bring her up.

“We had six units there, police and ambulance services were also with us.”

The woman's current condition is still unknown.

A GMFRS spokesperson said: “At around 12:30am this morning (Friday, 18th November), firefighters were called to reports of a person falling from a railway bridge onto the embankment on Lever Street in Bolton.

“Two fire engines from Bolton Central and Stretford fire stations quickly attended the scene. GMFRS worked with Network Rail to stop trains in both directions while the rescue was carried out.

"Firefighters used a turn table ladder and winching system to retrieve the woman from the embankment.

“The woman was assessed at the scene by fire personal before being transferred to the care of North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) and taken to hospital. Firefighters left the scene at around 3am.”

Greater Manchester Police and the North West Ambulance Service have been contacted for a comment.
