WANDERERS fan Dave Johnston is hoping he can use the Reebok to inspire a successful run in the Blue Square UK Open.

The Tyldesley darts star, who plays for the Volunteer in Darcy Lever, faces Stuart Pickles in the first round tonight determined to shine on home turf.

Johnston, who is ranked 29th in the world on the BDO circuit, went out in the first round the last time he played in the event in 2006, and wants to improve on that this year.

"I can't wait," said the 27-year-old, who works as an HGV driver. "I just want to enjoy it and see how far I can go.

"Being a Wanderers fan, the Reebok is the perfect venue for me. I competed in 2006 and I wasn't playing very well at the time. That should stand me in good stead. I know what to expect now.

"I don't know anything about Stuart Pickles other than that he plays at county level for London, but I also play at county level so I have to be confident.

"I am ranked 29th in the world in the BDO despite playing in only a handful of events, so I know I am playing some good stuff.

"The nature of the tournament means that anybody can beat anybody."

Johnston, who reached the event, dubbed The FA Cup of Darts,' by virtue of winning a pub qualifier, will not be short of support.

"My family, friends and a few lads I play with are coming along," he added. "I might also be on television so that will gee me up.

"I have never been on one of the main boards before, never mind the television, so that will be an experience. It's all exciting and I just want to put on a good show and enjoy it - whatever happens."

Johnston is fourth on board two. Should he defeat Pickles, he will play either Alan Casey, Alan Green or Lee Palfreyman.
