A professional boxer is giving back to the community by opening a new boxing gym with his brother.

The Flatley Brothers Boxing Club opened in Edgworth on Tuesday evening for adults and children alike.

It’s a chance for the super welterweight boxer to pass on his expertise as a successful boxer from Farnworth with 21 wins in 26 professional fights, and 77 amateur bouts.

Jack will run the new gym alongside his brother, Kieran Flatly, a professional boxing coach.

Jack said: “I have coached boxing for the last seven years and always used someone else’s place, so I wanted to have my own place.

“My brother and I always spoke about it and it’s really nice to be able to work together.

“I am still going to be focusing on my own training as well and I have my brother helping me too.”

Jack will continue his professional career alongside the gym and is looking to fight this spring.

He said: “It’s important because I have always wanted to do it and an area like Edgworth does not have a boxing club really or a boxing scene.

“And I have always wanted to be a part of this in Bolton itself.”

Jack started boxing when he was just 10-years-old and has not looked back since, but boxing is not the only thing the Flatley brother can do well.

In 2016, Jack graduated in sociology, proving that boxers are more than just athletes getting punched.

He said: “I was probably an overweight kid when I started.

“I was still boxing professionally while I was studying at university, so I know that I can focus on more than one thing, but it’s also just part of having a good team behind you.

“I was not always a confident kid, but boxing helped me develop that and I became healthier.”

Jack says he feels inspired when young people say they look up to him to follow in his shoes.

He said: “People can expect to be able to learn how to box from people who have been there and done it at a good level.

“I am passing on my experience to anyone else who joins us.”
