There is a great contrast between the trees and open spaces of Queen’s Park which are in the foreground of this photo and the mill chimneys which are spewing thick smoke into the sky.
The picture was taken looking from Spa Road in 1949 when the mills - and the smoke - were just a part of Bolton’s skyline.
If anyone recognises the mills in question we’d love to hear from you.
This was before the first Clean Air Act came into force in 1956 aimed at preventing such pollution of the atmosphere.
There is certainly some thick smoke coming from those chimneys.
