Breightmet residents have been left in shock after hearing “two gunshots” on what they describe as a “quiet” street where neighbours are like family.

Police taped off Yewdale Gardens in the early hours of this morning and, following enquiries, they confirmed that a firearms discharge took place.

Robert Weall – who lives on the street – says he witnessed the incident unfold from his bedroom window, and says it was scary.

He said: “I heard two gunshots and I saw the shots being fired at a neighbour’s door, from my window.

“At the time it was scary because this has never happened at all on this street, and I’ve been living here for about eight to nine years.

“Quite a few people have been concerned about what it was.”

Robert says he also saw armed police on the scene along with six unmarked and marked police vehicles, as well as CSI.

His mum Louise initially thought the loud sound was fireworks and says she has mixed feelings about safety because of not knowing what will happen next.

She said: “It is really scary, and we are a very close street; it’s a family street.

The Bolton News: “You’re just scared now of answering your door sometimes, because you just think why is someone knocking on my door at this time of night.

“So, now, I always look out of my window to see if I know who it is and lock my door all the time.

“When we moved on here it was a really quiet street, even when the kids were off for the six-week holidays.

“It used to be a quiet street and now it just seems to be getting worse.”

Another resident also says that it is a quiet street and there has never been an incident like this before.

The middle section of Yewdale Gardens remains taped off while officers continue investigations.

No arrests have been made at this time, but police patrols have been stepped up in the area.

Ward councillor Cllr Adele Warren said: “When you hear of an incident like this, it is always extremely concerning and worrying for local residents.

“I am sure that GMP are doing all they can to investigate what has happened and hopefully they can provide some reassurance regarding this matter.”

A spokesperson for GMP said: “Greater Manchester Police were called to Yewdale Gardens in Breightmet, Bolton at around midnight on Tuesday 27 February 2024 to reports of a firearm discharge.

“Officers attended and following enquiries overnight have confirmed a firearms discharge did take place.

“A scene remains whilst an investigation continues.

“No arrests have been made but patrols have been increased to offer reassurance to the local community.

“If anyone has information that may help, they are asked to call 101 quoting incident 29 of 27/02/2024.
