This was the scene in Astley Bridge following what the Bolton Evening News described in 1964 as “Bolton’s worst storm”.

The Bolton News: Berkeley Road, Astley Bridge, 1964

Over three inches of rain fell in less than 24 hours in July that year - most of it within an hour - causing severe flooding. Sheds and garages collapsed under the weight of water and many people were stranded in their homes as rivers burst their banks.

This photo shows the cleaning up operation on Berkeley Road after mud and debris was left all over the road.
