This is a remarkable photo in many ways.
For a start it is one of the older pictures in our archive, showing Bolton in 1922.
Look at how tightly-packed everything is.
This is an early example of infra-red photography which makes it almost look as though this is an illustration.
In the middle distance you can see the town hall and three cranes involved in building the extension to the civic centre. On the left are the factories of the Cannon Street Mills.
The steeple in the foreground belongs to Emmanuel Church.
