This photo from 1973 records a moment when the architecture around Bolton’s Victoria Square changed dramatically.
Many Boltonians still lament the demolition of the Commercial Hotel on the corner with Oxford Street the year before to allow construction work to begin.
Taking shape was a new Mothercare store - at the time reputed to be the largest one in the country, costing around £500,000.
It’s nice to see that the contractors used locally-supplied steel girders for the new building.
The modernist structure which opened in 1974 still stands today - it’s home to Barclays Bank - and it still divides opinion
The photo also shows us the Victoria Square fountains either side of the war memorial.
