A cat found desperately ill with liver failure is being cared for by a local animal rescue charity.

Diefers Legacy Animal Rescue, Bolton, have named the British Longhair cat, Wolfie, and say he was found with matted and flea-ridden fur with severe liver failure when he was taken into their care.

The cat is believed to be 10-years-old and is one of the many cats being care for at the centre.

Lisa Thorley, from the animal shelter, said:  “When we first saw him, he was a mess, matted and looked in a bad way."

"He was fall of worms, fleas and was a complete skeleton and no weight on him at all.

“He was dying of liver failure, was yellow with jaundice."

Lisa got Wolfie neutered and on medication to help him through his recovery, and while Wolfie looks and sounds much better, it is unclear whether he will survive the disease.

Lisa said: “He had enough and was ready to give up."

Lack of food is said to have caused the liver failure.

Lisa said: “His body was shutting down and he was really sad.

“For the first six months he was getting worse, and the vet said from the paperwork that this cat should not even be alive.”

But now, Wolfie has regained his confidence  and sits in the living room as well as the kitchen, with his fur growing back and liver functions seems to be improving.

Lisa said: “It has taken a long time to heal, and it looks like his liver is regenerating but we are not 100 percent sure if he will make it.

“When I first saw him, I thought this cat was not going to make it and it was too late.

“But now he has doubled in weight, he was only 2.3kg and he is now 5kilos now.”
