Astley Bridge sink hole, 1964
Residents look on trying to work out where the giant sink hole close to their homes had come from.
This photo was taken in July 1964 after the large crater on spare land off Old Road at Astley Bridge suddenly appeared overnight.
There were fears that youngsters might fall into the hole as the waste ground was a popular playground.
