A fresh warning has gone out that Royal Bolton Hospital’s accident and emergency department is “extremely busy.”

As of Sunday, March 24, the average waiting time for people at the A&E department at the hospital on Minerva Road, Farnworth has soared to more than four hours.

This comes after repeated warnings people should only go to A&E if they are facing genuinely “life or limb” threatening emergencies.

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust statement said: “No matter how busy our Emergency Department is, the most seriously ill and injured patients will always be seen immediately.

“If you choose to visit us and do not need urgent or emergency treatment, you will be safely supported to access an alternative service.”

Over the last week, staff at Royal Bolton Hospital warned people about how busy the A&E department had become after they were forced to close part of it because of a drainage issue.

Though this was resolved within hours, medics have still warned repeatedly that people with less serious ailments should try alternative services to avoid long waits.

A statement said: “Choosing the most appropriate place for care allows our ambulance and emergency department staff to concentrate on people whose lives are at risk, and can potentially save you a long wait.

“Our Emergency Department is not an alternative to a GP appointment.

“If your GP is closed you can go to 111.nhs.uk or call 111, which will direct you to the best local service.”
