A WOMAN’S daily protest has forced workmen to abandon building a zebra crossing across a main road in Westhoughton.

Two crossings were due to be installed along Bolton Road, but resident Joanne Murphy objected to the move.

The mother-of-two, who is disabled, got up early every morning to park her car outside her home, preventing the work being carried out by Bolton Council, although it was being funded by Westhoughton Town Council.

Mrs Murphy argued that a pelican crossing, which involves pedestrians waiting for a green light before crossing, would be safer than a zebra crossing. She also pointed out there was a suitable crossing further down the road.

A spokesman for Bolton Council said: “Engineers were unable to continue work on the crossing due to a vehicle obstructing the site.

“We understand that representations were being made to the town council about the crossing and we are waiting further instruction from the town council following this.”

Mrs Murphy, aged 44, said: “I am pleased the work has been stopped. But it is only temporary at the moment. I’m hoping the town council will re-consider their decision so it is stopped altogether.

Bolton Council refused to fund these crossings because there was no need for them. I think the town council should be spending the money on more worthy projects.”

The issue is due to be discussed at the next meeting of Westhoughton Town Council, on Monday, September 29
