TV superstar Vernon Kay is coming home to switch on the Christmas lights in Bolton.

Vernon's appearance will be the highlight of what officials describe will be a fantastic night of entertainment at the biggest show in town.

The star of ITV1’s All Star Family Fortunes and Beat the Star will help pull the giant switch in Victoria Square at 5.30pm on Sunday, November 23.

He is the latest Bolton personality to perform the honour, following Peter Kay, Dave Spikey, Sam Allardyce, Amir Khan and a host of others in recent years.

The traditional Christmas parade with Frosty the snowman and friends, and Father Christmas in his sleigh, will leave Churchgate at 4.45pm to make its way to the square for the grand finale.

Vernon told The Bolton News: "I’m really proud of my roots and am looking forward to going back to Bolton and starting the countdown to Christmas.

The Bolton News: Vernon Kay - presenter of Family Fortunes "Bolton people are great, they’re really funny and down to earth and this will be a great way for me to end the year, back in my hometown.”

Bolton’s Christmas Lights Switch-On is the biggest free show in Bolton with up to 10,000 people packing Victoria Square, and is sponsored by the new Market Place Shopping Centre.

New lights are also being added to the town’s display and installed on Churchgate, Blackhorse Street, Ashburner Street and Moor Lane with Christmas trees also on Churchgate.
