THERE has been a massive resurgence in ballroom dancing in recent years thanks to television programmes like Strictly Come Dancing.

Now everyone wants to be able to waltz, do the foxtrot or even the paso doble. But ballroom dancing has always had its fans, and in 1979 pupils at one high school were stepping out in style. The original caption to our photograph read: “Pupils show their paces at Latin American dancing during an evening of entertainment presented at Smithills High School, Bolton, last night. The show was put on by the school’s physical education department and brass band.”

Altogether now — slow, slow, quick, quick, slow.
