FORMER Bolton Wanderers manager Sam Allardyce will officially open a new-look sports complex today after it underwent a £65,000 refurbishment.

Allardyce, known to fans as Big Sam, will unveil the revamped Johnson Fold complex this afternoon.

The sports centre, originally built in 1986, was in need of a major overhaul after 22 years of use.

It benefited from £25,000 from the Youth Opportunities Fund, following a request from young people on the estate.

The same amount came from Bolton at Home and a further £15,000 was generated from the hire of the venue over the years.

Cllr Ismail Ibrahim, Executive Member for Play Services at Bolton Council, said: “The refurbishment would not have happened if the council had not worked very closely with local residents and volunteers. It is a wonderful arrangement which has benefited the community.”

Schools across the area can make the most of the improved facilities through after-school tournaments, while Johnson Fold Primary School uses it during the day.

The facility is available seven days a week, making it a valuable asset for the community as well as for the schools.

The Youth Opportunities Fund provides money from Central Government for schemes which benefit the local community and offer good value for money.
