IT WAS disappointing enough to see Chelsea take the points on Saturday but what upset me more than anything was seeing some of their unsporting antics.

They are a good side and they don’t need to resort to any nonsense but I was ashamed to call myself an ex-professional footballer at one stage.

First it was Scolari having a right go at the fourth official, obviously trying to get Kevin Davies booked, and then even worse the right-back Jose Bosingwa rolling over trying to get Gavin McCann sent off.

Gav caught the lad, but it wasn’t malicious and what did it for me was that at first he was holding his leg, then his knee and ended up holding his head. It was some injury.

I’ve always been one of those who thinks you should just get up and get on with it and I just can’t be doing with anything like that.

The Bolton fans were right to boo him.

One Chelsea player who did impress me, though, was Deco. I thought he was outstanding but what did he cost – £20million?

To be honest I thought Bolton gave Chelsea too much respect in the first half. Davo missing that early chance was crucial – and he knows it, judging by what he said after the game – and Chelsea took full advantage, scoring twice in fairly quick succession.

They were two world class finishes, although I think we made it easy for Nicolas Anelka with some poor marking.

It’s no surprise to see Anelka doing well for Chelsea, having seen him do so well for us. It was a privilege to have him here and you have to give credit to the people who brought him to Bolton in the first place – he’s the biggest player we’ve had here and it was understandable that he’d go on to bigger and better things because we couldn’t offer him Champions League football.

Saying all that about Chelsea though, I think if we’d started as well as we did against Middlesbrough and Sunderland, it would have been a different story. I think we gave Chelsea too much respect and I know Gary Megson ripped into them at half time. I’m not sure if he threw any tea cups but he got a reaction and the second-half performance was so much better. I was impressed by that and you could see that the fans were too.

We’ll do okay if we can repeat that second-half performance at Aston Villa on Saturday. The free travel’s on again so hopefully we’ll have another good following down there.

It was good to see the police chief, Dave Lee, get a good reception at the Reebok on Saturday.

I came across him when I was with the fans in Madrid last season and he’s a lovely fella. Sadly, he’s retiring after 30 years but he got a good send off and they presented him with a signed shirt. We had a good laugh when he was leaving the pitch and Lofty knocked his hat off.

I must have looked particularly smart this week because when a group of kids came down from one of the sponsors’ boxes to have their pictures taken, one of them called me over and said: “Come on Mr Chairman, get on the picture with us.” Phil Gartside was in stitches.

I was made up for Amir Khan on Saturday night and phoned his manager after the fight to pass on my congratulations. That kid’s been hammered from pillar to post by some of the critics, but he came back with a professional performance. He’s going to go on and win the world title one day.
