THE last full meeting of Bolton Council in 2008 takes place in Bolton on Wednesday night — with several topics on the agenda.

Post office closures, the council’s recent road gritting efforts, the use of Tasers by police and the amount of help for businesses and tenants during the recession will all be debated at Bolton Town Hall.

The Liberal Democrats, backed by Bolton’s Conservative group, plan to criticise the town’s three Labour MPs for demonstrating a “lack of support for post offices” during their struggle to keep the Government contract to run a basic card account for customers.

The party will also call on the Labour administration to agree to the setting up of an all-party task force to meet regularly throughout the winter to look at how well the council’s gritting teams are performing.

Liberal Democrat councillor David Wilkinson wants an end-of-season review of the effectiveness of the gritting operation, after Bolton’s traffic ground to a halt during last week’s snow.

Also on the agenda are discussions about whether the council should set up an all-party group to ensure that struggling tenants and businesses get all the help they can get from the council during the recession.

Opposition councillors are also due to criticise the Government for considering plans to move tenants from social housing while there is a shortage of affordable homes in Bolton.

The meeting is open to the public and will be held in the Council Chamber at Bolton Town Hall from 7pm.
