BOLTON boxer Jonny Rocco is set to become a household name overnight after being selected for Prizefighter.

The 26-year-old has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to appear in the televised Sky tournament on March 24.

And with a £25,000 first prize up for grabs, it represents the biggest pay day of the part-time postman’s career.

“It’s a big, big show and great opportunity for me,” said the Great Lever fighter. “There’s is a lot of money up for grabs but it’s not just about that though. It’s about getting my name out there.

“Winning this would open so many doors and lead to title fights – and not just little ones, I’m talking major titles.”

Rocco, who has just one blemish on his 13-fight record, was due to take on Rob Hunt in Birmingham on Friday night.

The unbeaten Stafford opponent, however, pulled out of the contest just this week, much to the former Tonge Moor amateur’s annoyance.

But his displeasure turned to delight when Prizefighter came knocking.

The popular series has proved a major success since its inauguration last April. The winner-takes-all format sees eight competitors compete in a cup-style knockout.

After four previous Prizefighters, it is now the turn of the lightweights, with Rocco, a natural light-welterweight who turned professional in 2005, confident he can make the weight – and that the tournament’s set-up will suit his style.

“I’ve got seven weeks to make the weight so it shouldn’t be a problem,” he said.

“I normally fight at 10st 4lb, so to get down to 10st shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

“With quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final on the same night, you have to be at your best to win it but, with the fights over three rounds, I think it will suit my style because I always start quickly.”
