Not With A Bang Tyldesley Little Theatre, Lemon Street, Tyldesley THE bitterly cold wind was no deterrent for an almost capacity audience for the opening night at TLT and their play by “Rochdale Cowboy” Mike Harding.

Set in the 1970s when women chained themselves to the railings at Greenham Common, Not With A Bang tells the tale of two families who come to blows over the issue of war and, in particular, nuclear war. On one side of the fence are the men while their wives are on the other.

Male chauvinist Nobby (Tony Thompson) who, together with his best mate — the easy-going Tommy (Ken Berry) and Tommy’s son Ken (Ian Taylor) —are members of the Territorial Army.

They, of course, are all for the use of arms and bombs and go off to play soldiers with guns in hand, heeding no thought to the death and destruction their little “toys” can cause.

But it is when Ken’s wife Paula (Louise Robinson) watches a film on the bombing of Hiroshima that things start to heat up.

Together with Tony’s wife Norma (Jenny Whur), hypochondriac Eileen (Kaye Taylor) and matriarch Bella (Roma Etherington) it soon becomes a battle of the sexes — in more ways than one, with all feminine favours withdrawn.

This is a laugh-out-loud adult comedy and director Denis Beardsworth really got the best out of all the actors — their comic timing was perfect.

If you fancy a little winter cheer pop down to TLT. You are guaranteed laughs galore.
