A LANDMARK historic building has been given another stay of execution after Bolton Council agreed to re-examine its structural condition.
Council chiefs met on Wednesday to decide whether the former Bolton Community College building, in Clarence Street, should be restored or knocked down, but the decision was deferred.
The council originally wanted to demolish the distinctive red-brick building and replace it with a temporary 108-space pay-and-display car park.
But the demolition work was dramatically halted when conservation group Save Britain’s Heritage obtained a High Court injunction and the council admitted its decision to knock down the building was unlawful.
Clarence Street’s fate now lies with council leader Cllr Cliff Morris in his capacity as Executive member for strategy and external relationships.
He deferred the decision because he wanted more time to consider some of the issues raised by expert structural engineer Brian Morton, who examined the building at the request of Save Britain’s Heritage.
