PLANS for a controversial waste transfer station at Blackrod have been shelved — because of the credit crunch.

Orchid Environmental applied for planning permission for a plant capable of processing 75,000 tonnes of waste a year at the site of J Dickinson and Sons in Station Road.

But councillors threw out the proposals after hundreds of residents formed a campaign group and objected about the potential increase in traffic.

The firm’s appeal was due to be heard at a public inquiry next month, but Orchid withdrew the application on Tuesday afternoon.

Residents were delighted that their fight proved worthwhile.
