MILITARY celebrations will take centre stage on Saturday when the Honorary Freedom of the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton is officially conferred on The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment.
To mark the occasion, 150 of the regiment’s soldiers will march into Victoria Square in Bolton for a religious service and ceremony.
The Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Anthony Connell, will present them with a special scroll giving permission to march through the town on ceremonial occasions with swords drawn, bayonets fixed, drums beating and flags flying.
The regiment, which has recently been involved in conflict zones such as Iraq, has strong links with Bolton, with many of its troops coming from the town.
The celebrations on Saturday will begin with 150 soldiers from the regiment marching to the town centre from the Nelson Street barracks, arriving in Victoria Square for 11.15am.
A civic procession will then leave the town hall, followed by an open-air service, before the scroll conferring the Freedom of the Borough is presented to Colonel Steve Davies, accepting it on the regiment’s behalf.
